Trip Home and Harold
Warp's Pioneer Village
Our New Mexico visit was canceled. Jim had eye surgery
and the altitude at Pie Town was not good for him yet. We decided that
after
Scottsbluff we would head east. We got home on August 5th.
Ron and Sam told us about The Great Platte
River Road Archway Monument in Kearney, NE. They
also mentioned Clyde & Vi's Campground and
the USA Steak Buffet. At that time Kearney was 200 miles out
of our way, but once we changed plans it was on the way home.
Clyde & Vi's has seen better days. When we got there
we
weren't sure it was open. There was a young man in the place
that
seemed only interested in our $20 cash only. It looked like
only
about 1/3 of the sites are still in use and those are not being
maintained. But the hookups worked. It was HOT!
We cooled down a little and went over to the USA Steak Buffet.
It
was good, the place was clean, service was good. Our fellow
patrons were pretty unappetizing.
We chatted briefly with one of our fellow campers. He raved
about
Grandpa's Steak House. It was too hot to be outside much.
We also picked up some brocures and decided to do the Pioneer Village
instead of the Arch. After Pioneer Village Camille announced
that
whe was done with tourist activities for the trip.
Cottonwoods and Clarksville
were
pleasant campgrounds. The further east we went the worse
traffic
became and the hotter it got.
Harold Warp Pioneer Village
From this
website:
Harold Warp was president
and founder of Warp Plastics, a Chicago-based manufacturer of window
screening material such as Flex-O-Glass, Glass- O-Net and Red-O-Tex. If
you haven't heard of any of these products then you're obviously not a
Midwest chicken farmer, for it is these humble men of the soil who
bought Warp's products and made him a millionaire.
And what did he do with his
millions? He didn't buy fancy cars and swimming pools. No sir. He
bought his hometown schoolhouse, his hometown church, an old depot,
fort and land office and other places of no particular historical
significance, and stuck them together in his Pioneer Village. Warp's
collection now comprises over 25 buildings, including the oldest
merry-go-round in the United States, which you can still ride for a
nickel.
His T Shirt says: "Trust Me, I've Been Doing This a Long Time."
Trip Summary
Wow! Highlights were Glacier, Yellowstone, Beartooth Pass, Black Hills.
Grand Teton's didn't excite me.
Got to go back to the east side of Glacier and back to the Beartooth
Pass. Everybody says the Canadian Rockies are beautiful and I'd
like to to the Wind River area south of Custer.
We didn't get to the Monmouth Springs area of Yellowstone but that's not high on my list.
