Weighed my truck today

We stopped at a truck stop to buy fuel.  (Us diesel puppies buy “fuel”)

The scale was right there and not busy so I asked.  Cost $8.  They have several pads so you can get separate weights.

Scale said:

            Steer Axle         4,760 lbs

            Drive Axle        5,400 lbs

            Trailer Axle      7,120 lbs

            Gross              17,280 lbs

Truck (from the Dodge Towing Guide in Feb ‘05)

With 3.73 Axle Ratio [i] You Can Tow 13750 lbs

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) [i] = 9900 lbs
Payload [i] = 2788 lbs
Curb Weight [i] = 7112 lbs
Curb Weight Front/Rear = 4301 / 2811 lbs
GAWR [i] Front/Rear = 5200 / 6200 lbs
Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) [i] = 21000 lbs

While it's not listed in the charts, tongue weight [i] is also an important consideration. The recommended tongue weight is between 10 & 15% of the trailer weight. However, the maximum tongue weight on Class III (The bumper ball) is limited to 500 lbs, and Class IV (The receiver hitch) to 1200 lbs. This requirement overrides any recommended GTW rating, between 10% and 15% of gross trailer weight (GTW). Additionally, the GAWRs and GVWRs should never be exceeded.

My door sticker says:

            Front Axle        5,200

Rear Axle         6,150  (this seems to be the only difference between ’04 & ’05)

GVWR            9,900  (interesting that the axle total capacity of 11,350 is 1,450 more than GVWR)

Trailer

            Dry weight (brochure)    6,795

            Pin weight (brochure)    1,500

            Dry Weigh (sticker)      7,331

            Max Gross (sticker)      10,750

So what’s it all mean.

Well within tow rating.

            GCWR  21,000

            Actual    17,280

                          -------

            Margin     3,720

Both truck axles are ok.

Truck is overweight

            Steer Axle         4760

            Drive Axle         5400

            Total                10160

            GCWR             9900

Overweight         260 lbs – This is about what I thought – hitch is heavy (~350), bed liner is ~200 lbs, tool box

We got a lot of stuff

            Truck   7112

            Trailer  7331

            Total    14443

            Gross   17280

            Dry      14443

            Stuff      2773

Stuff includes Me, Camille, the cat, hitch, bed liner, tool box plus all the normal “stuff”.

Guess at the makeup of the 2773 lbs:

Pin

1800

Hitch

350

Passengers

350

Bedliner

200

etc

73

------------

Total

2773

And then, at Qz I added a Generator (27 lbs), a gallon of Gasoline (8 lbs) and two 69 pound batteries.  I’ll remove the original battery – maybe 35 lbs – when I get home.
