Drove to Hungry Horse and Mountain Meadow RV Park
Had lunch at Col. Doug Allard's in Ronan, Mt. Very pleasant stop. Good, reasonable, nice people and atmosphere.
We followed 93 around to the west of Flathead Lake. Mrs. G. wanted us to go 35 around to the east of Flathead Lake but we stayed on 93 because it was a "bigger road". There was construction on 93 all the way. On and off. Dusty gravel. the worse was around the lake. Long stretches of one way traffic. Don't know what 35 was like but if I had it to do over again I'd try 35.
Mountain Meadow (TL 25.5, $29/night) is spread out up the mountain. Rustic, not groomed. More privacy than other commercial campgrounds. Free wireless internet.
After being here a few days I'm putting Mountain Meadow on my not recommended list. It's pretty close to the highway and you get a lot of road noise. Being spread out up the mountain, walking around is pretty strenuous, that means that we don't do it. There is also a lot of dust from vehicles coming in, we're probably on the worse site for that. They come up the hill behind us, sometimes with difficulty, and then turn the curve.
A couple of the RV Forum members have said good things about the KOA. It closer to Glacier and back about a mile from the road.
Chapter 3: Did a tour of the KOA with the Fassolds. Yes it's closer to Glacier (further from the Grocery Store) and well back from the highway. It's also huge and crowded. I guess Mountain Meadow is the best bet.
We drove into Glacier and stopped at the visitor center (and numerous gift shops). The visitor center was small and crowded. There were two rangers behind a counter under attack by about 20 tourist. When my turn came, I asked: "Short easy day hikes?". The ranger asked "First time?" I said yes and he whipped out his highliter, marked up a map and said "This is where you want to go." I was still debating driving the Going to the Sun Road or taking the Jammer Bus and asked him "Full size pickup truck on the Going to the Sun Road?" He said "Max vehicle length 21 feet, your measurement, if you wind up in jail we'll send you some reading material."
Here's what he highlighted. Notice that most of the places are on the east side.
We went over to the Lake McDonald area and had lunch in the lodge.
Glacier is so beautiful it hurts. I don't know why I react to Glacier like that and didn't to the Tetons.
The Red Jammer Bus
is an alternative to driving the Going to the Sun Road. We've decided
to drive after looking up the specs on the Dodge. It's 227.7 inches
long.
